Goya’s engravings

Goya engravings

From 12 March to 8 June 2008.

Appointed court painter because of his talent and versatility, Francisco Goya y Lucientes, better known as Goya, was a major 18th century Spanish painter generally known by the average art enthusiast as the creator of the dramatic “Dos de Mayo”…

This fabulous painting pays tribute to Spanish rebels during the Franco-Spanish War. However, it is only one of a number of magnificent works. Goya dazzled the cultural world with the fluent and naturalistic style of his paintings, which also had a keen satirical edge.
A successful and popular painter (works such as “Tres de Mayo” and the “black paintings” series were widely acclaimed), Goya began to experiment with the trickier technique of engraving, an art form that would gave him plenty of scope for caricature. With masterpieces such as “Los Caprichos” and “Los Prorerbios”, Goya led Spanish art into hitherto unexplored territory.
Through a rich and astonishing exhibition, the Petit Palais offers an insight into the work of Goya the engraver, a realistic and politically committed artist. A must-see.

Located on the famous Place des Vosges, Victor Hugo lived on the second floor of the Hôtel de Rohan-Guéménée from 1832 to 1848. He wrote some of his major works there : Marie Tudor, Ruy Blas, Les Burgraves, Les Chants du crépuscule, Les Voix intérieures, a large part of Les Misérables… and received Lamartine, Vigny, Dumas, Gautier… The visit of the apartment illustrates the three main stages of his life (before, during and after exile) through the display of his furniture, different memorabilia and some astonishing interior decoration produced during his exile in Guernesey.
The first floor is devoted to temporary exhibitions and displays his drawings as well as an iconography of his literary work. A rich library is open to the public by appointment. The museum organizes talks in the appartment of Victor Hugo and workshops for young visitors (information at the museum office).
