Atelier de Bruxelles, Tenture La Passion du Christ, Pieter van A

No, this is not fine gold and silver work, sceptres and the Queen’s necklaces but Flemish Renaissance tapestries, jealously guarded in Spain’s royal palaces. Twenty or more tapestries from the sumptuous collection of the Habsburgs, which at the time were considered to be as precious as jewels.

Today they are held in great esteem as a fragile witness to the golden age of the refined art of silk and wool weaving with gold and silver threads. The great monarchs of the 16th century (Margaret of Austria, Charles V, Philip II) all commissioned sumptuous bed drapery and wall hangings from great artists and weaving houses in Brussels. As much a way of showing their power and prestige as satisfying their comfort and their appreciation of beauty.

From 15th April to 4th July, the Mobilier National will exhibit priceless pieces by Jérôme Bosch, the author of a famous Saint Anthony’s Temptation or Jules Romain, the greatest of Raphaël’s pupils, at the Galerie des Gobelins. You can also see tapestries from the prestigious workshops of Pieter Van Aelst and Willem Dermoyen who had great experts in painted cartoons and historical painting working for them. A rare opportunity to see such talent and such masterpieces all together in the same exhibition.

turner-et-ses-peintres

William Turner (1775-1851) – painter, watercolourist and printmaker – is considered to be one of the greatest English masters of watercolour landscapes.

Turner built a fascination for landscapes and ambiances in the course of his many travels. Nourished by a constant conversation with the works of the old masters (Poussin, Le Lorrain, Rembrandt etc.) and of his contemporaries (Constable, Bonington etc.), he gradually began to practise innovative painting. Nicknamed the “painter of light”, he then worked with the suggestive power of colour.

Featuring over 80 paintings and graphic works, the exhibition retraces the construction of a unique world of light. It also relies on his observations and encounters in order to better grasp his artistic processes.
Experience the development of this forerunner to Impressionism through his paintings and sources of inspiration.
